[fusion_text]The city of Harrisburg is the capitol of Pennsylvania with a city limits population of about 50,000 residents. This city has been voted as recession proof and a wonderful place to raise a family. Plus, Harrisburg is known for having solid financial stability, though likely contributed to the amount of governmental offices that are grounded here.

[/fusion_text][separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”” bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Harrisburg is rich in history. Many people travel to this area to see the National Civil War Museum, the Pennsylvania State Capitol, the Cathedral of Saint Patrick, and Fort Hunter Mansion and Park. On the other hand, the residents who have access to these everyday tend to find other things to do – such as dining at Rubicon or Char’s at Tracy Mansion. Of course, shopping is always in season at the Harrisburg Mall or Colonial Park Mall.

With all the visitors to the city, the residents of Harrisburg work hard to keep the city clean and green. The Public Works Department has incorporated a recycling program to collect items such as plastic, paper, cardboard, aluminum, and steel. But it doesn’t have to stop there! The Harrisburg residents can do so much to transform this city into a green machine!

  • Gather volunteers to clean up the streets. Litter is going to happen, both on purpose and on accident. But, regardless of how the trash gets there, it doesn’t have to stay there. Round up some volunteer residents and hit the streets. Pick up all the debris and discard of it properly.
  • Increase the use of solar energy. City, state, and federal government buildings can set the precedence for the rest of the community by switching to the use of solar energy. There is something to be said about leading by example.
  • Reduce water usage. Consider water efficient plumbing for all government office buildings (and recommend them for homes, as well). This includes toilets, faucets, showers, etc. Despite weather conditions, initiate water restrictions for residential outdoor water usage. Be proactive! Water lawns early in the morning and avoid running sprinklers during the hottest part of the day. In addition, residences and public city areas could benefit from switching to artificial turf. This looks just like real grass – feels like it, too. But, it doesn’t require any watering. What a fantastic way to save this precious resource!
  • Set up community flea markets or yard/garage sales periodically throughout the year. Buying used rather than new can save you money and can also help the environment. If you want to get rid of something, you can throw it away, you can sell it, or you can give it away. The former is what you are trying to avoid.
  • Work on promoting and education residents about public transportation. Make it easy and make it accessible. Ranking the city higher on the walkability meter is what you want. Bus, train, bicycle, or even carpool can reduce carbon footprints immensely.
  • Promote local growers and businesses. Convince residents of the importance of buying local and supporting local businesses.
  • Education is key when it comes to going green. Most people want to make a difference, but they either don’t know how or they aren’t even aware that something is a problem. Having community programs in place to educate, train, and act on environmental conservation efforts can make a substantial difference. After all, you cannot change what you don’t know or don’t understand.
