Phoenix

The metropolitan area of Phoenix, Arizona is the home of over 4 million residents, great Mexican food, and more than 200 golf courses. It has long been the desired destination for many, lured in by the beautiful desert paradise and stunning sunsets. Not to mention, the surrounding mountains are full of adventure, the museums are plentiful, and the Daylight Savings Time does not exist.

Climate

Nicknamed the Valley of the Sun, Phoenix has a lot of sun and only 8.04 inches of average rainfall per year. In fact, only 32 days per year, on average, have any sort of measurable precipitation. In fact, Arizona is currently dealing with a 21-year drought. Luckily, the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) has a Drought Preparedness Plan in place to be proactive in maintaining their water supply. Creating the ability to obtain water from multiple sources (i.e. Colorado River, Salt River, Verde River, etc.), storing water in underground aquifers as emergency reserves, and enacting strict water laws and conservation practices are just a few examples of what the State of Arizona has done to protect the residents from water shortage.

While it is comforting to know that the state is taking precautions against drought, it does not mean that residents should ignore the potential for disaster. In fact, putting a conservation plan in place for your home can, in part, ensure that the state’s efforts will be successful.

Saving Water

To begin creating your own plan to conserve water, you should attempt to rank the importance of your water usage. Of course, you will want to continue using your water for drinking, cooking, bathing/hygiene purposes, but not all water usage is a necessity. For example, changing the way you maintain your lawn – or halting your lawn water usage altogether – could lead to a great increase in your water conservation. Yes, unfortunately, this will lead to your once green grass turning to an unsightly shade of brown.

If you decide that you just cannot forego your green lawn, here a few tips for maintaining it during a drought:

  • Raise the blade on your lawnmower, keeping the grass long, in turn, shading the roots.
  • Decrease the size of your lawn by adding more drought-friendly landscaping.
  • Manually water your lawn.
  • Use a drought tolerant lawn alternative.

Only one of the above steps will keep your lawn from falling victim to drought – a drought tolerant lawn alternative. This is a lawn made of a synthetic turf that never requires a drop of water! It stays green and soft with an eye-catching appearance despite the weather condition.[/fusion_text]
