1. Food and goods should be localized. Growing its own food through community gardens or local farmers is a good place to start. Also, shopping locally, rather than from big chain stores and eating at local diners or with locally grown foods is beneficial.
2. Create a localized energy source. Becoming energy efficient with solar power, hydroelectricity, or wind power can help a city be more self-reliant.
3. Public transportation is a must. Having an easy means for travelling throughout the city can create a better opportunity for residents to use this transportation rather than driving. Whether bus, train, or city bikes – if it is accessible, they will use it!
4. Conserve resources. A community can work together to conserve resources, especially water. Paying attention to water usage inside and outside the home. Changing habits such as turning the water off when brushing teeth, using a dishwasher for washing dishes, timing showers, setting guidelines for outside water usage, and never, ever leaving a hose running. Choosing to replace your lawn with artificial turf can make a dramatic difference in conservation. This grass feels and looks like real grass but it doesn’t require any watering.
5. Constructing buildings using new, green technology. They work to reduce waste and are efficient in heating and cooling costs. Combine work and living spaces – for example, first floor storefronts and offices, then upper floors as residences. This allows for condensed living, likely increasing the ease of access to fulfill any needs.
6. Empower the residents. Educate residents on growth and technology, provide affordable housing to build self-esteem, place emphasis on the importance and enjoyment of life – combined, these can create change. When people understand and they feel good, they can accomplish just about anything. With the right tools and the right knowledge, city residents can initiate that change and excel at it.
